Hello, this is Kuwahara from IMS.

Warm autumn days seemed to drag on, but now winter has suddenly arrived! December caught me off-guard, and I had to rush to get my winter coat from the dry cleaner. Have you already made plans for Christmas and the New Year holidays?

I know some of you may be planning a trip to Hawaii for sun and relaxation, so be sure to apply for an ESTA at least 72 hours before departure. And be careful filling out the online form! If you are rejected due to an input error, you must apply for a B visa. The US Embassy will be closed during Christmas, however, and even if you apply and receive a visa, you will not receive it immediately. In most cases, it takes up to 1 week for your passport to be delivered.

Although IMS has support services for US visas, we may be unable to make visa interview reservations if the US Embassy reservations are full, or the Embassy is closed. Early preparation means plenty of time to respond to any hiccups in the application process. If you plan to travel to the US, we recommend finishing preparations at least 1 week before your flight, and not just 72 hours.

In the previous "John Goes" series installment, Miki was able to reapply for her US visa. In this episode, let's return to John's daily life after Miki went to the United States.

In a local cafe...

"Ugh, I'm so bored..." John said, sighing.

"What's the matter, John? You look so glum," said Maeda-san, John's coworker in NYKN's HR department.

"Oh, Maeda-san." John hadn't noticed Maeda-san was there. He sighed again and gestured for Maeda-san to sit across the table. "I don't know what it is, but lately I just haven't felt motivated. Nothing is fun anymore."

"John, no!" Maeda-san protested. "Please don't say you're going to quit! You're such a great engineer at our company!"

"Don't worry, I don't want to quit. Work is fun! But everything else..."

Maeda-san thought on this. "Hmm... It could be the seasonal change. Or, maybe since Miki-san is gone, you don't feel challenged at work."

"Are you saying I need a rival?"

"No, no, nothing like that. You just need something to challenge you at work, add some interest to your day. Oh, I know! We have someone from the Chinese branch that will be joining your team soon. He just turned 20, though, so you'll have to help him out a bit."

"Wait, what? He's pretty young for a full-time employee. I thought you already had to graduate in technologies, humanities, or international affairs?"

Maeda-san just laughed. "John-kun, since when did you get knowledgeable about visas? That's true, normally you have to graduate in a related field, but this employee has been working at the Chinese branch for a year and a half. That's why he's able to come." (*1)

John had already felt distracted from earlier, and now this new information just made him feel even more jumbled. He decided not to ask Maeda-san further.

"...right, okay," said John. "I understand a little, I think. I'll do my best to be a mentor!"

John-kun, don't worry! Christmas is soon approaching.

(*1) Unlike the Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services visa, the Intra-Company Transferee visa does not require a relevant educational background. However, it is required that the applicant has at least one year work experience at the dispatching company with a capital relationship to the host company/organization in Japan. Also, the applicant must work at the physical office of the host company while in Japan.

Employee Eligibility: Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services visa, Intra-Company Transferee visa
