A person with "dependent visa" status must obtain "Activities other than that permitted under the status of residence" if he/she wishes to engage in employment activities.

Students, family members of students, and family members of those who have obtained " dependent visa" status for employment may also obtain "permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence" if they work up to 28 hours per week, excluding adult entertainment businesses, etc.

Activities other than that permitted under the status of residence" means to engage in activities beyond the scope of one's original status of residence in Japan, such as part-time work or other activities not included in one's original status of residence.

For example, "College Student" is originally a status of residence to concentrate on academic studies and is not intended to work, so in principle it is not possible to work, but since one cannot make a living without a part-time job, one must apply separately in the form of "Activities other than that permitted under the status of residence.

Moreover, the work-related status of residence also specifies the content of activities, so, for example, a person employed as an office worker is not allowed to engage in other part-time work.

However, due to the recent outbreak of the new coronavirus, there have been cases in which corporate activities have been suspended, and there have been many cases in which applications for activities other than those permitted under the status of residence have been filed and approved, such as side jobs and part-time work.

Thus, "Activities other than the status of residence" are activities other than those permitted under the status of residence, which are approved in advance.

"Activities other than that permitted under the status of residence" require compliance with laws, regulations, and rules, including restrictions on the period of stay and working hours, as well as compliance with working conditions and wages.

In principle, an application for permission to engage in an activity other than that permitted under the status of residence allows the applicant to work only up to 28 hours per week.
In addition, the "Application for Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence" stipulated in Article 19 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act prohibits working in the adult entertainment business.

Foreign students are allowed to work up to 40 hours per week during long vacations such as summer and winter vacation.
Please note that if you do not observe this time limit and work only part-time instead of going to school, for example, you may be found to be inactive in your status of residence at the time of your next renewal, and your renewal or change of status of residence may not be approved.

Exceeding these time limits for activities other than those permitted under the status of residence may be revealed through taxation certificates, tax payment certificates, and bank account receipts and disbursements records.
