Hello, this is Kou of IMS Legal Professional Corporation. Last week, we received many inquiries regarding Japan, US, and Vietnam visas. Since the circumstances of each of our clients differ, our consultants offer carefully tailored advice tailored for each client.

In this post, I will be addressing an inquiry we received asking about differences in the necessary documents for the student visa applications for those who are planning to study at a Japanese language school categorized as an “appropriate school”. I will specifically discuss what an “appropriate school” is.

What is an Appropriate School?

The term refers to an educational institution annually selected by the Immigration Services Bureau of Japan as an "appropriate school". This means they are considered to be recognized as properly managing the enrollment of international students. The school is selected from the perspective of conducting appropriate and smooth immigration procedures; this includes residence evaluation for international students from among all education institutions that accept international students under the "Student" visa. For more information about the selection criteria, please refer to the following webpage of the Immigration Services Bureau of Japan.

If the Immigration Services Bureau recognizes an educational institute as an “appropriate school”, they are directly notified. Many of the universities for which we provide visa consulting services have also been selected as “appropriate schools”.

International students planning to enroll or are enrolled in an "appropriate school" are eligible for simplified procedures. These include the omission of some necessary documents when submitting applications related to status of residence.

However, it is difficult to give a general explanation about which specific documents can be omitted, since application documents vary on individual circumstances. For example, if you have studied in Japan in the past, or if your application for a student visa was previously denied, the documents you need to submit will vary.

In addition, you may be asked to submit additional documents during the evaluation process by the Immigration Bureau, even if you initially omit some documents when submitting your application.

Consultation Tailored for You

We provide consulting services regarding student visas for several public and private universities, and have experience in handling tens of thousands of applications for "Certificate of Eligibility" and residence applications (renewal applications, status change applications, etc.) on behalf of international students and researchers. When accepting international students from overseas, educational institutions in Japan usually apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in Japan on behalf of the foreign students, but there are some schools that are not equipped to handle this application process.

If you are having trouble due to your school in Japan being unable to handle the application, please feel free to contact us. We can work with the person in charge at your school and apply for the COE on your behalf. Also, if you are affiliated with an educational institution that is having trouble with COE or other applications, please feel free to contact us.
