Hello, this is Kuwahara of IMS Legal Professional Corporation. The post's title may sound a bit inappropriate, but ever since the restrictions on new arrivals from overseas, we have received a large number of consultation requests from people who can normally enter Japan with only a passport.

The majority of these inquiries are about how to enter Japan, how to live in Japan, and how to get permanent residence in Japan. Since people are used to being able to enter the country with just their passport, they now are facing hurdles entering without a mid- to long-term visa. (Currently, due to the state of emergency, even new mid- to long-term visa holders cannot enter Japan.) The current entry restrictions seem to be causing of lot of stress, especially to those who often come to Japan for short-term business.

Since this blog is also available on our English website, I would like to clarify some things for those who receive our consulting services.

Strict Confidentiality

First, as administrative scriveners, we are required by law to maintain confidentiality of our clients' information. Therefore, even if we do not enter into a formal contract or sign an NDA, our clients' personal information will not be disclosed to outside parties. So please feel free to consult us at your leisure.

That said, for some cases if we are not provided specific information, we may not be able to provide you with efficient consulting. If someone says, "I would like to obtain a certain status of residence, but I need to know the conditions for obtaining it," we can give them the basic conditions. However, depending on the person's situation, we may not be able to give them the information they need to meet the other requirements because we lack the specifics about their situation.

Therefore, if you clearly state your current situation and purpose for entering Japan, such as "I have been working at XYZ Company for XX years and I would like to stay in Japan for this purpose, what should I do?" we will be able to provide you with some options.

Emigrating to Japan

In addition, there are many other problems happening in the world, and I feel that more and more people are considering moving to Japan. There are some countries where you can emigrate if you have enough money; I think many of our customers are considering emigrating to Japan in the same way. However, you cannot apply for permanent residency in Japan unless you have lived in Japan for at least one year. In addition, only those with a "Highly-Skilled Professional" visa can apply after one year. If you have another visa, like an Engineer or Humanities visa, you will need to live in Japan for more than 10 years. Even after the application is approved, it will take nearly two years from the start of residency for the application to be reviewed.

If you simply want to live in Japan for a certain period of time, and not permanently, there are other visa options available. Please contact us if you are considering this.
