Hello everyone, this is Shimoyama of IMS.

I wonder if many companies have switched to teleworking after the emergency declaration last week? The stress of staying home every day can definitely lead to irritating interactions at home... It's seeing stories like this that make me want to remind everyone to be kind and supporting to others.

Many universities and schools are now offering online classes due to closures. Because of this, I recently received an inquiry asking if online classes could be considered "study abroad" for the purposes of the Student visa.

① Japanese Language Schools

The Ministry of Justice has a notice on their website regarding Japanese language schools.

Q5: I would like to take classes online in order to prevent infection, but is this a problem?
A: To prevent the spread of infectious diseases, online classes can be regarded as part of the curriculum to the extent necessary. Note that online classes are only permitted as urgent measures.

② Universities

The Ministry of Education has released the following statement regarding universities.

From the perspective of school management and as a measure against the new coronavirus infectious disease, we recognize that there are situations where it is necessary to hold lessons off-campus as necessary which correspond to the "Student" status of residence.

Due to this kind of emergency, immigration is taking measures to allow online classes that are not normally accepted on a Student visa.
(*If you are exclusively educated through distance learning, you are not permitted to do activities in accordance with the Student status of residence.)

Many universities seem to be closed until at least the end of the Golden Week holidays in May. I sincerely hope that life will return to normal soon. I also think that many international students are full of anxiety during these unusual times in Japan. If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.
