This section explains the procedures for hiring a foreign student as a full-time employee and for hiring a foreign student as a part-time employee.

In the case of hiring a new graduate as a full-time employee

Necessary application

Application for permission for change of status of residence. Foreign nationals residing in Japan have one of the statuses of residence.

Foreign students usually stay in Japan under the status of residence of "College Student. The "College Student" status is for "students of universities, junior colleges, technical colleges, Japanese language schools, high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools" in Japan.

In principle, "college student" visa holders are not allowed to work.
However, with permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the status of residence, it is possible to work part-time with a limit of 28 hours per week.

Therefore, if you wish to hire a foreign student as a full-time employee, you must first change his/her status of residence from "College Student" to "Working Visa",
The status of residence must be changed to one of the following categories: Diplomacy, Official, Professor, Arts, Religion, Journalism, Highly Skilled Professional, Business Manager, Legal/Accounting, Medical, Research, Education, Engineer/Humanities/International Services, Intra-company Transfer, Nursing, Entertainment, Skilled, Technical Intern Training, or Designated Skills, and an "Application for Change of Status of Residence" must be filed. An "application for permission to change status of residence" must be filed.

These statuses of residence have specific requirements for academic and work experience,
It is very important to have a good understanding of what you studied at the university, etc. during the period when you had the status of residence of "College Student".
The content of what you studied at a university or other institution during the period you had "College Student" status is very important.

Generally, foreign students often change their status of residence to "Engineer/Humanities/International Services".

Time of procedure

In the case of a foreign student joining a company in April, it is possible to apply for permission to change status of residence from January of the same year (December for the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau).

Locations where procedures are to be taken

The Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, Regional Immigration Bureaus (formerly Regional Immigration Offices), and their branch offices and sub-branches are available for procedures.

In the case of part-time employment

Each status of residence allows part-time work with "permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence," but with a limit of 28 hours per week.
Permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the status of residence is granted within the scope that does not interfere with activities that are part of the status of residence already held.

If you are a "Permanent Resident," "Spouse or Child of a Japanese National," "Spouse or Child of a Permanent Resident," or "Temporary Resident," you do not need to obtain a "Permit to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence" because there are no restrictions on work.

If you are a "student," "dependent," or "designated activities," etc.
If you have a status of residence of "Cultural Activities", you can apply for "Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence".

If you have the status of residence "Cultural Activities", you can apply for the "Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence".
You are required to apply for it individually when you have an offer of employment.

Please note that detailed procedures differ depending on each status of residence as described above.
