Hello, this is Ito of IMS Legal Professional Corporation. In Tokyo, the number of infections is decreasing day by day, and the government is on the move to relax the immigration restrictions. From October 1, if you 1) submit a vaccination certificate and 2) are tested negative after voluntarily taking the COVID-19 test 10 days after entering Japan, your quarantine period will be shortened from 14 days to 10 days, and you will be exempted from staying at the accommodation designated by the quarantine station.

The vaccination certification must show that at least 14days has passed after the second dose of the vaccine, and the inoculated vaccine had to be either “Pfizer,” “Moderna,” or “AstraZeneca.” From October 12, “Covishield,” which is manufactured with the license by AstraZeneca and therefore will be treated the same as AstraZeneca, will be added to this list.

Also, more countries/regions have been added to the list of countries/regions whose COVID-19 vaccination certificates are considered valid.

Going to take a COVID-19 test to shorten your quarantine period is not considered an “unnecessary outing” and you cannot use public transportation, so you must think of a way to get there, using a private car, taxi, etc. How do the testing facilities distinguish those people with others and handle it? Inspection kits can be used, but since it requires delivery time, it will probably take at least one extra day to receive the results than actually going to take the test. That said, the quarantine period can be shortened to 12 days minimum, but to whether or not take this effort just for shortening 2 days will depend on each individual’s situation.

Likely, most children have not been vaccinated, so they do not qualify for the quarantine shortening measures. Therefore, when entering Japan with children, even if the quarantine period of the parents is shortened, the family will have to wait for 14 days after all.
