This is Kou of IMS Legal Professional Corporation. Today, I would like to introduce some points to remember when applying for children’s extension of period of stay. A permanent resident’s child turning 16 can also relate to this information, so please refer to this as well.

For children under 16 years of age with a residential status other than “permanent resident” -- such as “dependent,” etc. -- the end of their period of stay or their 16th birthday, whichever comes first, will be their validity period. Therefore, if their birthday comes first, they must apply for the extension of their residence card beforehand.

When applying for the extension of period of stay for the whole family, for example, the expiration date of the newly issued residence card as “Dependent” is normally the same as the main body (spouse/parent) or the other family members. However, if the expiration date of the original residence card comes before the child’s 16th birthday, and their birthday comes soon after the expiration date, the expiration date of the newly issued residence card of that child will be until their birthday, meaning their card will only be valid for a few days.

If the child is turning 16 in less than 6 months at the time of the application, you should submit the “application for extension of the validity period on the residence card,” photograph attached, together with the required documents for the “extension of period of stay” application. In that way, the procedure can be completed all at once, so please keep that in mind. Applications for the extension of the validity period on the residence card can be submitted beginning 6 months before the child’s 16th birthday until the day the child turns 16.
