Hello, this is Iwaya of IMS Legal Professional Corporation. Is it the sign of the rainy season coming up? This week has started off with unclear skies, but let’s cheer up and give our best to another week.

Last week was another busy week for client inquiries. 84 requests for Japanese visas, 19 for U.S. visas, 14 for Vietnamese visas, 3 regarding naturalization, and 27 others of various types.

In this blog, I would like to explain a little about one of the inquiries we received last week regarding the Japanese language ability needed to apply for naturalization.

To apply for naturalization, Japanese language ability of some extent is required. However, it is not stated in the application requirements nor the level is specified. Generally, elementary school level or N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is desired. In other words, conditions are met if you have no problem in daily conversations.

When applying for naturalization, you must have an interview with the Legal Affairs Bureau beforehand. If your Japanese is too poor at that point, sometimes you need to take a writing test. At the worst, your application for naturalization will be denied.

Those who have been living in Japan for a few years likely have no problem with their Japanese. However, for those who can barely speak Japanese, there is a possibility that their application for naturalization will be rejected. The final decision is made after the interview with the Legal Affairs Bureau. If you are not confident with your Japanese and worried about the interview, etc., please contact us.

At IMS, if requested, we accompany those going to the Legal Affairs Bureau for naturalization application interviews. We offer English, Chinese, and Korean support as well. If you are thinking of applying for naturalization, please consult IMS.
