Hello, this is Miyahora of IMS Legal Professional Corporation.

In mid-March, U.S. Embassies and Consulates in Japan announced that U.S. visa services will be suspended due to developing coronavirus situation. Currently, there have been no further announcements regarding resuming services. In some cases, there have been people with non-immigrant visas or exchange visitor visas (J-1) who had to temporarily stop training in the U.S. and return to Japan. Some have even been forced to end their training early. Unsurprisingly, the number of J-1 trainees returning to Japan is steadily increasing.

Normally, if you leave the United States for a temporary visit to Japan (or other country), you are limited to 30 days each trip. However, due to the impact of the coronavirus epidemic, the ability to re-enter the U.S. is now uncertain. Therefore, SEVIS records will be kept open and the visa status of trainees will remain active. It seems the U.S. Department of State is allowing flexibility for those who are stuck outside the U.S. during their training, even if 30 days has passed. I continue to hope that this situation will settle and training programs can resume as soon as possible.

This is the time for patience and taking care of yourself, both in body and mind. Stay at home, save lives.
