This is Stephanie of IMS Legal Professional Corporation. Beginning September 30, Brazilian tourists to Japan will now be allowed to enter the country visa-free for short trips up to 90 days. The decision establishes a mutual visa exemption agreement between Japan and Brazil, following a summit earlier this year. The visa exemption will initially be valid for three years.

Brazil removed visa requirements for short stays by Japanese travelers in 2019 to boost tourism to the country. However, Brazil had planned to reinstate the visa requirement for Japanese citizens later this year, unless Japan reciprocated visa-free travel for Brazilians. Japan's recent decision prompted Brazil to retract the visa requirement.

Brazil's foreign ministry said, "The exemption will contribute to strengthening human ties and the relations between the two countries in the year marking the 115th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil."

A "Short-Term Stay" is defined as, "A stay of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities." In general, the following chart must be followed:
