Documents required for renewal are different for each category.
Category (Institution)
Category 1
Companies listed on Japanese stock exchanges
Mutual companies engaged in the insurance business
Foreign national or local government
Japanese national or local government-approved public corporations
Category 2
Organizations/individuals with withholding tax of 10 million yen or more on the total withholding tax for employment income in the statutory report of withholding tax on employment income for the previous year.
Category 3
Organizations/individuals (excluding Category 2) for which a statement of withholding tax for the previous year has been submitted in the total statutory report of withholding tax for employment income, etc.
Category 4
Organizations/individuals that do not fall under any of the above categories
Required documents for all categories
Application for extension of period of stay (1 copy)
Forms are available at regional immigration bureaus. (The form can also be obtained from the website of the Ministry of Justice.
1 photo (4 cm x 3 cm)
(Must be taken from the front within 3 months prior to the application, with a clear, hatless face and no background.
Please write the applicant's name on the back of the photo and affix it to the photo section of the application form.
Passport and Resident Card (including Alien Registration Card which is considered as Resident Card)
Additional documents required for Category 1
A copy of the quarterly securities report or a document certifying that the company is listed on a Japanese stock exchange (copy)
Document certifying that the establishment of the company has been approved by the competent authorities (copy)
Additional documents required for Category 2
A copy of the withholding tax statement of salary income for the previous year and other statutory records (a copy of the statement with the tax office's seal of approval)
Additional documents required for Category 3
A copy of the withholding tax certificate for the previous year (a copy of the receipt stamp of the tax office)
A copy of the financial statements for the most recent fiscal year
Certificate of taxation (or tax exemption) of residence tax: 1 copy () Certificate of tax payment (showing total income and tax payment for the year) 1 copy ()
*Issued by the municipal office of the city, ward, town or village where you are registered as a resident as of January 1.
Either one of these certificates is acceptable, as long as both certificates show gross income and tax payment status (whether or not taxes have been paid) for the past year.
*If the certificate is not issued by the municipal office of your residence soon after your entry into Japan or due to relocation, etc., please contact the regional immigration office with jurisdiction.
Additional documents required for Category 4
A copy of financial statements for the most recent fiscal year
Certificate of exemption from withholding tax for foreign corporations or other documents that clearly show that withholding tax is not required 1 copy
Certificate of taxation (or tax exemption) of residence tax: 1 copy () Certificate of tax payment (showing total income and tax payment for the year): 1 copy ()
(*Issued by the municipal office where you are registered as a resident as of January 1.

If the certificate is not issued by the municipal office of your residence because you have not been in Japan for a short period of time or because you have moved to a new address, please contact the regional immigration office with jurisdiction.
