This is Tomita of IMS.

One of the occasional questions we receive is from those with a Highly-Skilled Professional visa status. They ask, "My birthday is coming up and getting older means my points will go down, and I won't have enough. What should I do?"

Since the period of stay for this visa is always 5 years, it is unfortunately unavoidable to lose points based on the Age and Age-Based Annual Income categories.

Speaking of... the points for Highly-Specialized Professionals do not have to be maintained during the 5-year period. Even if you no longer meet the points criteria, you can continue your activities on this visa until its expiration.

This changes at the time of renewal. Renewals require applicants to meet point criteria, so if you do not have enough due to age, etc., your application may be denied. There is always the possibility to change to a regular Professor or Researcher visa, however, if you meet those qualifications.
