Hello, this is Ito of IMS.

In order to work at a hotel in Japan, there are three visa options that are available depending on your situation.

Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services

Generally, foreign workers on this visa are required to engage in work that requires "the thinking and sensitivity of a foreigner", and the work must make use of their professional skills and knowledge. For example, this includes operations such as hotel reception, marketing, public relations, and accommodation planning for the purpose of attracting foreign tourists. Therefore, work targeting Japanese people is not allowed.

Designated Activities No. 46

Applicants must have graduated from a 4-year university or graduate school in Japan. They must have at least 480 points on Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT) or a level of N1 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

Examples of activities on this visa include: opening and updating a website in a foreign language that also serves as a translation service, interpreting for and giving help to foreign customers, serving customers as bell staff and doormen, and providing guidance to other foreign employees. Some say that this is a desirable visa status because it allows visa holders to serve Japanese guests as well.

※ Work duties that fall under the Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services visa are also allowed. However, bell staff and doormen are not allowed to apply for the Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services.

Specified Skilled Worker

Out of the 14 industries allowed under this visa, there are 3 categories applicable to hotels. Depending on the work duties, these categories are "Accommodation", "Food Service", and " Building Cleaning Management ".

The Accommodation field assumes that the applicant will be engaged in all operations related to accommodation and hospitality services such as reception, planning and public relations, customer service, and restaurant services. (Applications limited to only one type of operations will not be allowed.)

For Food Service, the foreign worker can work at a restaurant which is located in a hotel. Working at a restaurant directly managed by the hotel is not allowed.
