In order to apply for a permanent residence visa in Japan, a guarantor must be a Japanese national or a permanent residence visa holder (if a foreign national) who can sign the Letter of Guarantee.
The guarantor of an application for permanent residence has only a moral obligation and no legal obligation. Therefore, the guarantor is not legally liable for the applicant's acts or charges.
The guarantor must submit the following documents
Completed and signed guarantee form (click here for English version, here for Japanese version)
Certificate of residence issued by the ward or city office (within the last 3 months)
Certificate of residence tax issued by the ward or city office (family register certificate, tax payment certificate)
Certificate of employment issued by the guarantor's current employer (certificate of employment) or other proof of occupation
