What are the conditions for permanent residency / permanent visa in Japan ?


There are three main conditions for obtaining permanent resident status in Japan

  1. good conduct.
    Those who have violations of traffic laws, immigration laws, and other laws and regulations are basically not acceptable.

(1) In principle, the applicant must have resided in Japan for at least 10 years, 5 years of which must have been spent in Japan with either a work or residence status.

(3) The applicant must be residing in Japan for the maximum period of stay for the status of residence he/she currently holds.

(4) The applicant's home of residence must be in Japan (if he/she has been out of the country for a long period of time, it may be disadvantageous, depending on the reason).

(5) There is no risk of being harmful from a public health perspective.

There are five exceptions to the above five requirements that are considered to meet the conformity with national interest requirements even if the applicant does not meet these requirements.

Five special exceptions to the conformity with national interest requirements


1) Spouse of a Japanese national or permanent resident (Married for at least 3 years and residing in Japan for at least 1 year. Those who have been married for more than 3 years and have been in Japan for more than 1 year (those who have been brought to Japan after marriage must stay in Japan for more than 3 years).

(2) Permanent residents (those who have resided in Japan for at least 5 years after becoming permanent residents)

Refugees (those who have resided in Japan for 5 years or more since their refugee status was recognized)

(4) Those who are recognized as making a contribution to Japan (Resident for 5 years or more. Those who have won prizes such as Nobel Prize, Good Design Award, sports competitions, etc., and those who have been remarkably active in various fields such as diplomacy and welfare, etc.)

(5) Highly skilled professionals (those who have stayed in Japan for 3 years or more with highly skilled professional status and have accumulated 70 points or more, or those who have stayed in Japan for 1 year or more and have accumulated 80 points or more.

These are the five special exceptions.
